課程概述

In the theoretical part the students will learn about the basic concepts of archaeobotany and key methodological approaches. They will be provided knowledge about the relationships of plants and humans through the archaeological record, key (micro and macro) archaeobotanical remains and the main methods employed to reconstruct plant-related subsistence. Another part will present key knowledge on the development of agriculture, main economic plants (crops) and their origin and evolution (domestication). In the practical training students will obtain skills archaeobotanical field work (flotation, sample processing), sample sorting, identification, quantification and data analysis, presentation and interpretation. In a second practical part students will learn how to make use of modern macrobotanical reference material. This involves a visit to the NTU herbarium and/or the Taipei Botanical Garden and an exercise in which students will independently collect seeds from living plants for carbonization experiments.

課程目標
By the end of the course, students will have acquired basic knowledge about archaeobotany and how it is applied in archaeological research. The students will be able to organise and conduct archaeobotanical field work as part of archaeological excavations. They will know what macrobotanical assemblages can be used for and obtain basic skills in identifying macrobotanical remains and how to present and interpret archaeobotanical data.
課程要求
Participating students should be interested in ancient subsistence economies and early agriculture, should have at least intermediate English skills and should be capable and willing to conduct fine motor lab work and physical field work.
